A Better Look At
The World
Estimates of the number of Americans with visual impairment
depends on how it is defined. Some estimates indicate that there are
more than three (3) million Americans with low vision, almost one
(1) million who are "legally blind", and roughly 200,000 who are
more severely impaired.
Adults represent the vast majority of the visual impaired
population. Visual impairment is included in the ten (10) most
prevalent causes of disability in America.
For adults, visual problems have a negative impact on quality of
life and job performance.
In children, visual impairment is associated with developmental
delays and the need for special educational, vocational often beyond
childhood into adulthood
